A pervasive crisis amongst the Romanian hospitals emerged in 2002. Due to the absence of financial resources and the high cost of medicine, hospitals have found themselves without even the most basic of medical supplies, medication, and food.
After five years, the situation has not improved much. Some hospitals have been forced to close down, while others must require their patients to purchase their own medication and supply their own food. Unfortunately, many patients are financially unable to buy the medicines or food necessary to facilitate rehabilitation.
Child Life has collected medical supplies and medicines from US and shipped them to Romania for distribution in the most destitute areas. There is still a tremendous need for basic medical equipment like incubators for premature born babies.
Because providing the food for the patients has proved to be a major problem for many hospitals, Child Life took over the responsibility of helping 15 of the most needy medical institutions, with one nutritious meal per day for every patient.
